Marching Band
The Luella High School Marching Band
"The Roar of Luella”

The Luella High School Marching Band, “The Roar of Luella,” consists of all students in both Intermediate and Advanced Band. The Roar enjoys a reputation for musical excellence aesthetically complemented by vivid visual images and movement reflecting the mood and character of the music. The band has been recognized over the years as a Superior or Excellent rated ensemble. To continue this tradition of excellence requires a high degree of dedication, effort, and pride on the part of each person involved.
The style of marching that The Roar replicates is a combination of that of Big10 universities, Drum & Bugle Corps, as well as elements that are unique to Luella. The Luella High Marching Band displays pride in being the trendsetters among high school bands, and has never set its goals to be a carbon copy of any other high school or university band. It is this simple philosophy that sets the Luella High School Marching Band a step above the rest!
Auxiliary Groups
The Roar of Luella is accompanied by two amazing auxiliary teams, The Sensational Lionettes (majorette dance team) & The Dazzling Lionesses (color guard). These talented and dedicated individuals bring vibrancy and flair to our performances, and we’re thrilled to have them as part of our marching band. They are the epitome of glitz & glamour, the quintessence of style & grace, and the class act of Luella High School. The Lionesses and Lionettes will showcase their skills and creativity on the field and in the stands throughout the 2024-2025 Marching Season.
Membership in the Luella High School Marching Band auxiliary groups is by audition only. The student agrees to attend all rehearsals and performances, summer activities, and pay all set fees and uniform cost. Auxiliary members are considered to be band members, and therefore will be held to the same band policies as all other band members.

Concert & Jazz Ensembles
Beginning Band (Grade 9)
In this introductory course, students explore the fundamentals of instrumental music. They learn to play woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments, focusing on technique, tone production, and basic music theory. Students develop ensemble skills through group rehearsals and performances. No prior musical experience is required! The goal of the class is to give the students the fundamental skills needed to continue their development in the intermediate or advanced band, as well as other performance ensembles. Students will have the opportunity to perform music in various concerts and professionally adjudicated festivals. Members of the beginning band are also encouraged to seek private lessons. In May, every member will participate in an audition process to determine band placement for the following year.

Intermediate Band (Grades 9 & 10)
The Intermediate Band builds upon the foundational skills learned in either Beginning Band, or Junior High Band. Students continue to refine their technique, explore more complex music, and deepen their understanding of music theory. Emphasis is placed on ensemble playing, musical expression, and teamwork. Rehearsals also focus on the development of critical listening/aural skills; music literacy, and ensemble skills; and aesthetic musical awareness culminating in opportunities to perform at concerts, festivals, and other events, contributing to the vibrant musical community at Luella High School.

Advanced Band (Grades 11 & 12)
The Advanced Band is designed for experienced musicians who seek to refine their skills and explore challenging repertoire. Students delve into advanced techniques, musical interpretation, and ensemble dynamics. They participate in regional and state-level competitions, showcasing their talent and dedication. Whether preparing for college auditions or simply passionate about music, students in the Advanced Band contribute to the rich musical tradition at Luella High School.

Jazz Ensemble
The Jazz Ensemble is an exciting ensemble where students explore the world of swing, improvisation, and syncopated rhythms. Musicians learn to play jazz standards, blues, and contemporary jazz compositions. Emphasis is placed on individual expression, ensemble cohesion, and the art of improvisation. Students perform at school concerts, jazz festivals, and community events, infusing the air with the soulful sounds of jazz.
